DANGRIGA TOWN GARIFUNA CULTURAL TOURS:
Dangriga, formerly known as Stann Creek, is the main Garifuna cultural
center of Belize. The Garifuna people have a rich and interesting
history in Belize. The first Garifuna were survivors of a shipwrecked
slave ship bringing African prisoners to the New World to be sold as
slaves. The survivors swam ashore on St. Vincent Island and from there
came to Honduras and Belize where they mixed with the native Carib
Indians. The Garifuna adopted the Carib language, but maintained most
of their African musical and religious traditions.
Garifuna style drums
The Dangriga Town tour includes a visit to Mr. Austin Rodriquez, who
demonstrates the centuries old Garifuna drum making process. Mr.
Rodriquez and his daughters continue the hand crafting tradition in
their small family run business. The tour also includes stops at the
Gulisi Garifuna Museum, Marie Sharps famous hotsauces factory, and a
local Cassava plantation where you will see how Cassava bread and
crackers are made. This is a full day or half day tour. What to bring:
Sun Hat, sunscreen, camera, water bottle, insect repellent.
