BLUE HOLE NATIONAL PARK AND ST. HERMAN'S CAVE:
St. Herman's Blue Hole National Park (Inland Blue Hole) is about a 45
minute drive up the majestic Hummingbird Highway. The Blue Hole is
actually a collapsed sink hole (or cenote) which exposes a section of
underground stream, forming a beautiful blue swimming hole in the
middle of the jungle. The area is known to locals as the "Caves Branch"
since there are many limestone caves in the area. Also in the park is
St. Herman's Cave, one of the few caves in Belize where you do not need
special permission from the Belize Government to enter and explore.
From the cave's opening you gradually descend deeper into the earth,
and our guide will take you through a special trail and passage where
you will emerge from a different opening about a mile away.
Archeologists originally found many ancient Mayan artifacts in the cave
including pottery and arrow heads. At the entrance to the park is an
interactive visitors center and some knowledgeable park rangers who are
available to answer any of your questions. What to bring: Sun Hat,
comfortable hiking shoes or boots, swim wear, towel, sunscreen, insect
repellent, camera, water bottle, binoculars.
